The European Central Bank (ECB) has been actively addressing the environmental sustainability of Euro banknotes since 2003. Their efforts began with the release of the Life Cycle Assessment report for the first series of euro banknotes in 2004. Since then, the ECB has continuously worked to improve the sustainability of Euro banknotes, culminating in the publication of the Product Environmental Footprint for the second series of Euro banknotes in 2023. Currently, the ECB is focused on incorporating eco-design principles into future Euro banknotes. This presentation provides an overview of the entire process and showcases the initial outcomes of this eco-design approach.
