In this presentation Mr Woolford will talk about New Zealanders’ declining use of cash to pay for everyday things, which
may be the lowest in the world. This decline in cash use and people’s increasing difficulty to access cash, is the result of significant reduction in the numbers of bank branches and ATMs around New Zealand since 2000. New Zealand has a relatively small population but spread out geographically which makes cash-in-transit challenging. To help
address this, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will run community cash trials which Mr Woolford will explain in his presentation. The intention of the trials is to meet retailers cash needs locally, improve cash recycling, reduce
emissions, and remunerate retailer for the increasing cash-out services they are providing.
